What we measured on a flattened W-9, 8 September 2026
The table above is the feature list. This one is a test. We took the official IRS W-9 (Rev. March 2024), stripped out its 23 form fields so it behaves like a print-to-PDF copy, and put the same file through pdf2fill and PDFescape on the same day, signed out of both.

PDFescape found no fields either, and its editor is the manual kind: pick Form Field, draw a box, repeat. It's free without an account and the download isn't gated, which is more than pdfFiller offers. One thing to know from our run: the first session timed out while the tab sat idle and the document was gone when we came back, so don't wander off mid-form.

The manual field placement problem
PDFescape treats many PDFs as a blank canvas. If your document doesn't have built-in form fields, you add text boxes one by one, drag them into position, and resize them to fit the blank lines on the page. For a simple 1-page form, that is annoying. For a multi-page application, it starts to feel like layout work.
pdf2fill's detection engine reads the page layout and identifies likely blank lines, checkboxes, and signature areas automatically. A bigger size limit, no ads
PDFescape's free tier limits uploads to 10MB and 100 pages. For most forms, that's fine. But multi-page contracts, insurance packets, and scanned documents can easily exceed 10MB, and you'll hit a paywall.
pdf2fill accepts files up to 25MB, so most of those larger documents go through without a wall. There are also no ads on the page while you work.
When PDFescape is the better choice
If you need to edit a PDF (not just fill it), PDFescape has real editing tools: add images, draw shapes, insert annotations, white out sections.
